Characters in the novel Of mice and Men
Source: Google ImagesGeorge - George is the main character in the novel by John Steinbeck. He a small, quick man that travels with and cares for Lennie. Although there are some moments of weakness when George wishes Lennie wasn't around, he is devoted to helping Lennie out in his life. George has many motivations, but his main motivation is getting both him and Lennie to the farm of their dreams.

Lennie - Lennie is George's (see above) friend. He is Aunt Clara's nephew. He is large, lumbering, worker that migrated to America. Due to his slight mental illness he is dependent for protection and guidance on the man he travels with, his friend, George. He is highly motivated to get the farm that George and him have found. Lennie although child like is not able to control his strength leading to many deaths of creatures weaker then him. Lennie also has a passion of getting his own puppy, and of course tendin' the wabbits.

Candy - Candy is an aging man who is scared for his future on the ranch. After overhearing a conversation between George and Lennie, Candy offers to give his life savings to George and Lennie so that they can all get the farm of their dreams. Candy is in emotional shock after his dog is shot in the back of the head, foreshadowing Lennie's death.

Curley's wife - Curley's wife is the only female character in the story. She is noever given a proper name and is only referenced to as Curley's wife. Her fancy outfit represents the temptation of a female in a society dominated by males. Like all other people on the ranch she is lonely, and has dreams of a better life.

Curley - Curley is the son of the boss. He wears an outfit that allows him to be distinguished from the rest of the men on the ranch. He is an aggressive young man, who tries to prove himself by picking on people that are smaller than himself. He is possesive of his wife.

Crooks - Crooks is the only character in the novel with a different color of skin. He has the name from the fact that he has a crooked back. He naturally isolates himself from the rest of the ranch, due to the color of his skin. He becomes friends with Lennie.

Slim - Slim is the wisest and smartest person on the ranch. If anybody on the ranch has any questions, Slim is there to answer them. He was the one who made the decision to shoot Candy's dog. He is quiet, but understands George and Lennie and he is the one who is there when Lennie dies.

Carlson - An older male on the farm, who is the main reason Candy's dog dies. Carlson would always complain about how smelly and awful the dog was. He offers to take Candy's dog out of misery. Later his gun is used to kill Candy's dog.

Aunt Clara - A sweet old lady who took care of Lennie until she died. She is dead at the beginning of the novel so would do not get to see her. She was the one who would always give Lennie all the mice he would later kill.
